The Inspirations Behind Newstalgic Studios & The Shadow Games

May 15, 2025

They say nostalgia is a hell of a drug. I say it’s also a compass.

I grew up in the analog warmth of the ‘80s and ‘90s - before the web, before everything was always on. I’ve lived through each tectonic shift since: dial-up modems, AOL chat rooms, Myspace profiles, smartphones, wearables, crypto, AI. The convenience keeps increasing. So does the chaos.

We traded simplicity for scale. Locality for global feeds. Community for algorithms. In a world where everything is connected, we often feel more fragmented than ever.

That’s where Newstalgic Studios began - with the idea that we could use nostalgia not just to reminisce, but to rebuild.

A creative studio born in the shadows of our hyper-connected age, designed to forge bridges across fractured ecosystems. A space where the aesthetics of our past fuel the platforms of our future. A way to make discovery feel less like onboarding and more like falling in love with the internet again.

And the way in? A game, of course.

🎮 Gaming: The Original Onboarding Mechanism

Games have always been my first language.

From outdoor tag and tabletop quests to pixelated RPGs and glitchy arcade cabinets - I’ve played them all. And in every era, games have offered me the same thing: a sense of purpose, progression, and play. Life, to me, is just an RPG with better lighting.

That philosophy lives at the heart of The Shadow Games - our flagship onchain experience.

It’s not just “gamification.” It’s not points, badges, and leaderboards slapped onto apps.

It’s story-driven exploration.
It’s digital characters that evolve across quests.
It’s casual gaming fused with real economies.
It’s meaningful play - where your actions, choices, and curiosity shape your identity across web3.

🧠 Pop Culture as Lore, Language & Lore

Movies. Music. Books. Memes.
The cultural soup we all swim in is more than entertainment - it’s how we make sense of the world.

From the layered storytelling of The Matrix to the comedic world-bending of South Park, from D&D campaigns to 90s Nickelodeon slime, pop culture has always shaped the way I think, dream, and connect. So naturally, it’s a core ingredient in the worlds we’re building.

Every Shadow World in our universe draws from these shared cultural currents.
Some of you will spot the references. Others will just feel them.

Either way, the goal is the same:
To create worlds that feel lived-in, layered, and lovingly crafted.
Worlds that wink at the past even as they beckon you forward.

🗺️ The Scavenger Hunt That Changed Everything

Years ago, I joined a 24-hour city-wide scavenger hunt that rewired how I thought about engagement.

It wasn’t just “find this thing.” It was “become someone who would.” You had to perform, collaborate, sabotage, and explore - sometimes all at once. One task involved jumping onto a Blockbuster counter and reenacting The Lion King. (Yes, I did it. Yes, it was glorious.)

That one experience taught me this:
The best games blur the line between reality and play.

That spirit fuels The Shadow Games - not just as an online experience, but one that will eventually spill into the real world. Quests that cross media, culture, and geography. Stories that aren’t told to you, but told with you.

💥 The MSCHF Influence

I’ve always admired how MSCHF walks the line between parody and provocation - how they play with IP, culture, and commerce like it’s a sandbox.

But what they’re missing is what we’re building:
A shared identity layer. A community container. A persistent game.
We’re not just dropping chaos bombs for virality. We’re building a universe - where play, art, and tech evolve together with purpose.

🧬 Onchain Inspirations

We’re standing on the shoulders of giants - and weirdos - and code poets.

  • RENGAs & DirtyRobot’s capsules? World-class storytelling with modularity and stories that continue across mediums.
  • Stapleverse & ERC6551? Identity mechanics as fashion.
  • 9dcc & gmoney? Real-world wearables with web3 soul.
  • Beeple’s puzzles? Art as game. Game as gatekeeper.
  • Chainfaces Arena & Natives? Multiplayer narrative mechanics baked into the chain itself.

As @NateAlex wisely pointed out:

“No one collects Autoglyphs because of ‘the community.’ They do so because the milestone is obvious and significant.”

That’s what we aim for: obvious, significant, joyful, playable milestones that make you feel something. That make you want to tell someone.

🔥 Our Core Frustration

Everyone in web3 is building protocols, platforms, PFPs…But few are building experiences.

Most projects stop at infrastructure. We’re building the actual playground. We want you to do something with that wallet, that token, that onchain identity. Something that doesn’t feel like reading documentation, but like running through a portal in a Saturday morning cartoon.

🌌 So Why Newstalgic?

Because we want to make the future feel familiar.
Because we believe story is a better teacher than specs.
Because we think nostalgia isn’t the enemy of innovation - it’s the Trojan horse for it.
And because the internet was always meant to be weird, wild, and fun.

So we’re reclaiming that spirit.
One quest. One world. One Shadow at a time.

Reclaim the Narrative.
Play the Game.
Enter the Shadows.

Welcome to Newstalgic Studios.

Let’s make the internet fun again.
